BA Surcharge Regional Variance
Per my conversation with BAEC and independent research, it seems that BAEC surcharges across regions/currencies are arbitrarily set and are seemingly not “forex-matched”. May need to refine GDS integration to account for this with users across regions?
@Dom Clark - just wanted to make a discrete post to our comment thread because this may be a feature that needs some extra care. I’ll add in my commentary to the comments and leave the main post concise.

Had an interesting conversation over with a booking agent with BAEC that gave some clarity on the “tax” difference. Per him, like you said, the charge is based on the country registered to the account, and it’s not possible to request the charge to be processed in GBP for a US registered BAEC account.
What I guess shouldn’t be a big surprise to me was that it seems that unlike United et al. award fares on partners, where we see a breakdown of the taxes/fees for airport security charges, aviation security fees, customs fees, etc., these are entirely arbitrary values set for the surcharges (237.50 GBP or 475 USD) by BA without any breakdown. Of course, we’ve all experienced (or at least heard of) the terror that is BA’s surcharges, but I’d originally imagined they would be the same across regions and forex’ed instead of varying arbitrary values.
I guess the advantage of booking through BAEC is that they’ll charge lower surcharges, because the same flight we’ve been using as an example (o/w ATL-LHR on 11JAN2026 in J) has 733.00 USD in taxes via AAdvantage, with 700 USD of that being BA imposed fees.
Oh the joy of award travel ;) - hopefully this helps, but I guess this does make coding Planepoints harder as I think of why I went down this rabbit hole in the first place. It makes sense that your GDS integration will pull GBP taxes, but how can this be resolved for non-UK residents? I’d imagine these arbitrary surcharges would be different for each currency? Not sure…

What’s interesting too is that F surcharges seem pretty close together. 930.73 GBP vs 1183 USD (making the USD booking a tad cheaper, at FX rates currently). So maybe this is a Y/W/J quirk only?

The tax amounts we have at the moment are actually hard coded based on the UK rates for BA as these aren’t provided by any GDS as far as I’m aware. The challenge for us now is going to be to find the hard coded values for non UK regions 😅
